Before assuming the principalship at the high school, Dr. Davenport was the founding principal of the Thurgood Marshall Academy Lower School, a K-5 school in Harlem, New York, that emphasized cultural awareness and culturally responsive teaching and learning. The schools were created in partnership with The Abyssinian Development Corporation, New Visions for Public Schools, and The New York City Department of Education. Dr. Davenport received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mass Communication and a Master of Arts Degree in Communication from Norfolk State University, A Master's Degree in Education from Fordham University, and a Doctorate in Education Degree in Executive Leadership from St. John Fisher College.

His passion for working with young people started as a youth basketball program coordinator.
